A Porter Bee Escape is a simple one-way device used with a crown board or cover board to clear bees from supers before honey harvesting.

How to use: Fit the Porter Bee Escapes into the crown board holes and place the board beneath the supers 24 hours before harvesting. Bees can move down into the brood box but cannot return to the supers. By the next day, your supers will be virtually free of bees and ready for collection.

Turkish Cedar (scientific term is Cedrus Libani) is an ancient and highly prized tree variety, renowned for its longevity, valued for its toughness and versatility. This historic symbol of fruitfulness and strength originate in the Levant, with those Cedars on the slopes of Mt. Lebanon believed to be around 2,500 years old. The oldest Cedar Tree in the UK is thought to be in Highgate Wood, London (300 years old).

Why is Cedarwood best for beehives?

Cedar is solid, durable and wind resistant and is therefore by far the best wood for beehives in the UK climate. The natural oil inside the wood makes it less prone to warping. Functional excellence aside, our Cedarwood beehives each have a personality as unique and beautiful as the age-old timber from which it was crafted. Each hive boasts of a personal signature in the grain and natural knots which promises a both a rustic look and individual quality. Each and every hive is different.

But, don’t let the uniqueness of the Cedarwood’s texture concern you! The knots in the wood are intact, sound and tight (in the unlikely event that there are any issues, let us know, we will be here to solve the problem). All parts are checked prior to packaging but if you see any capillary cracks please don’t worry as they won’t get any bigger. It’s normal with this wood, and poses no risk to your beehive.

What is so special about Turkish white pine wood? 

The evergreen white pine or ladin belongs to the pine family and is one of the most common conifers. It can reach up to 50 meters and therefore it is the highest local tree in Turkey. The trunk can be up to 2 meters thick. It is characterized by a straight and rapid growth and it adapts easily to its natural environment. These trees can last about 200 years.

The white pine wood of the Black Sea is very light light-coloured when untreated and turns into a yellowish-brown when exposed to sunlight. Turkish White Pine can be worked very well and widely used in production of furniture and beehives. White pine is the most common wood used in beehives in the Black Sea region of Turkey where the climate is nearly the same as the UK. Anzer Honey produced in Black Sea in ladin beehives. White pine grows in many parts of the country but especially the Black Sea region. We used Kastamonu white pine in our beehives. Historically this area was called Paphlagonia and was known as the main source of shipyard timber from Romans to Ottomans.

We tried to use as much knot free wood as possible. It has small amount of resin and takes many oil base finishes and paintings. Glue bonding and surface treatment properties are good. Even left untreated the white pine very rarely allows moisture to pass through. It is known to be good at ventilation for beehives. The wood is durable on facades. It is mown properly and does not bend easily. You will like the handsome look on your beehive for sure.

STORY BEHIND THIS BEEHIVE:

These beehives are made from 100% natural cedar wood without any edge joining or gluing. We bought the timber from off-cut of a palace decoration. Timber was specially sun dried for 3/4 years to get the traditional outcome. You can sense the wonderfully soft aromatic smell from distance. Our beehives have a lot of personality and the natural knots provide a more rustic look and define the visual character of each of them. Each and every hive is different. You can name them differently as well. Basically you are not just buying a beehive. You are buying a valuable asset with a fantastic story for your household. The knots in the wood are intact, sound and tight (if there is any issue please let us know). All wood is checked prior to packaging but if you see any capillary cracks please don’t worry as they won’t get any bigger. It’s normal with this wood. As said we did not use any glue or chemicals to fill them in. A brush of teak oil or linseed oil can solve the issue if it occurs in many parts.

We are environmentally friendly people. We will not buy any timber if we don’t know the source of it. Any wood we buy comes from sustainable forests.

These beehives are produced by local carpenters who use traditional methods as well as modern machinery (cedar dried naturally first and then sometimes oven dried as well). Each piece is made from a single timber as we did not use machine pressing (edge joining) that involves chemicals and strong glues. Rarely we used wood filler as we avoided edge joining and wood pressing to secure the knots and capillary cracks. Our timber was produced from sustainable forests in Southern Turkey- from the legendary Taurus Mountains (where Santa Claus comes from).

You can leave these hives as it is or use linseed or teak oil to give them a fine finish. In home furniture they use these two types of oils. If you have a lot of free time you can do it for fun. Cedar is pitch free and perfectly suited to take virtually any stain, finish (or even bleaching) product, giving the beekeeper or builder myriad choices on the final look.
